The ballpoint pen is one of the most ubiquitous and taken-for-granted objects of our modern world. It’s hard to imagine a time when we didn’t have them, but believe it or not, the ballpoint pen is a relatively new invention. In this article, we’re going to take a look at the history of the ballpoint pen and how it works.
The first ballpoint pen was invented in 1888 by John J. Loud. Loud was an American leather tanner who was looking for a way to make a more durable and consistent ink for marking leather. He came up with the idea of using a small metal ball to apply the ink to the leather, and thus the ballpoint pen was born.
It wasn’t until 1931 that the modern ballpoint pen as we know it was invented. This was thanks to Hungarian journalist László Bíró, who noticed that the ink used in newspaper printing dried quickly, leaving behind no smudges or blots. He teamed up with his brother György to create a pen using this quick-drying ink
